Experiences of Previous Volunteers
"My major task was to research and compile a spreadsheet of relevant conferences that are held in North America, South America and Europe. This task in itself was a huge learning experience for me – a whole new world opened up for me. What I did not anticipate though, is how much I would learn about the politics, the complexity of the society and how it functions, the challenges that Israel faces in providing social services for the elderly, new immigrants, and other marginalized groups. The knowledge I gained from simply being in the office; attending staff meetings; listening as field-staff reported on their projects; sharing in the joy of success stories; and even crying with them when some of the news was sad, was the most valuable experience for me. I came to help 'build-up the land.' Volunteering at the Jerusalem Institute of Justice afforded me the opportunity to help 'build-up people' - to join in the task of promoting tzedakah/justice for all – for the poor, the elderly, the children, the soldiers – some of the most vulnerable groups in any society." --S.A.
